Gemological Institute of Colombo (GIC) is a subsidiary of B P De Silva Holdings Pte Ltd, Singapore which came into existence in 1872 and boasts a proud history of over 147 years. B P de Silva Group, from their inception in 1872, has been actively involved in the Gems & Jewellery industry. The group, a well-diversified conglomerate, always places a high emphasis on quality, modernity & latest technology whilst upholding its business values deep-rooted for generations.
It's been said that the only constant in life is change. The world of gemmology is no exception and I have seen the industry change and transform over the fifty years that I have been involved in this business.
In fact, our involvement in the gem and jewellery business stretches back to the year 1872 when Balage Porolis de Silva, my great grandfather (who incidentally was a jeweller) started a jewellery shop on the banks of the Singapore River.
From ancient days seal was used to authenticate written tablets by leaving its impression in the clay. Gemological Institute in Colombo “GIC” chose this impression of ancient Wax Seal for its logo to confirm the authenticity of Certificates issued by GIC.
In this logo design Microscope is incorporated to indicate GIC commitment to analyze scrutinize and examine the stones thoroughly prior to issuing certificates.

Our gemmologists are FGA qualified while our partner lab, Japan- Germany Gemmological Laboratory (JGGL) in Japan, has supplied us with a back-end database developed with a diverse number of gem testing results collected over many years. This partnership also enables GIC to verify the precision of the get testing results for the more intricate get by carrying out online re-checking and confirmation of results.
B P de Silva Holdings has been always keen to take the Sri Lankan Gem industry to the global level. Established in 2005, at a time when Sri Lanka did not have a high tech Gem Certification laboratory, Gemological Institute of Colombo (GIC) was an initiative by the Chairman of B P de Silva Group – Mr Sunil Amarasuriya mainly to support and improve this traditional trade with an accurate and trusted certification service using the latest high-tech equipment.
